Volunteers urge “twice-a-month Buddhists” to go vegetarian more often

In Singapore, there are people who adopt a vegetarian diet on the first and fifteenth day of the lunar calendar month. Therefore, long queues are visible at many vegetarian hawker stalls during those days. Tzu Chi volunteers seized the opportunity to share with the people in line about the benefits of vegetarianism with the hope of influencing these people to go meatless more frequently.

The sight of long queues in front of vegetarian food stalls are common in various hawker centres and food courts in Singapore on the first and fifteenth day of the lunar month.

Tzu Chi volunteer: Animals like elephants, cows and horses are herbivores. They have strong muscles.

Tzu Chi volunteers seized the opportunity to visit these hawker centres and vegetarian restaurants to promote vegetarianism to the people in line.

Tzu Chi volunteer, Tan Bee Hong: Actually, not everyone queuing in the line in front of a vegetarian stall is a vegetarian. Some of them are vegetarian only on the first and fifteenth day of the lunar month. (We are here to) persuade them to go meatless once a week.

Tzu Chi volunteer, Ong Lee Fung: In fact, many residents would be surprised to learn that 2,443 animals are slaughtered every second. And share with them the benefits of going vegetarian from the perspective of health and environmental protection.

Member of the public, Elsie Sng: She told me people who eat a lot of meat, you more or less kill a lot of animals which is not good, they are live animals, we take care ourselves, we also have to take care of animals

Members of the Tzu Chi International Medical Association (TIMA) are also promoting vegetarianism by teaching the public how to eat healthily as a vegetarian. Selina Low, who participated in the campaign for the first time, was a meat lover. She not only became healthier after becoming a vegetarian, she is also actively promoting vegetarianism by sharing her own experience.

TIMA member, Selina Low: In the past, I have to take iron supplements, then only my haemoglobin level will come up about 10, but now I don’t even have to take supplement. That just proved that vegetarian diet, if taken correctly, can be very very healthy , which is a very good way for me to promote vegetarian diet to people as well.

Through this campaign, we hope to encourage more people to liberate lives and protect mother earth with their food choices.
